Rush-Williams-Biddle family miscellaneous papers, 1776-1909.

Papers pertaining to the court martial of Commodore John Orde Creighton include Samuel L. Southard's general order and his letter giving Creighton command in Brazil; letters of accusation against Creighton; a summary of Creighton's arrests and suspensions of men; a log of the voyage; lists of witnesses and questions for their examination; Creighton's petitions to President Andrew Jackson; and drafts of his defense strategy. Also present are more than two hundred letters sent from Hugh Lenox Scott to his wife, Mary Merrill Scott. Scott's letters, spanning 1878 to 1889, contain vivid descriptions of life in the American West, especially Oklahoma and North Dakota. Also included among the miscellaneous material is a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to David Scull, President of the Board of Trustees of Bryn Mawr College; early printed versions of the lyrics to "Yankee Doodle"; and numerous photographs and portraits of members of the Rush, Williams, and Biddle families.
